Curriculum
For younger children the curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage, linking into the National Curriculum when appropriate for each child. Your child will be encouraged to progress at his/her own pace within a carefully structured scheme of work. This ensures a solid foundation on which to build.
Throughout the school your child will be encouraged to extend his/her learning by exploring and developing their own ideas and those of others, by experimenting and 'doing' with the help, care and support of highly experienced teachers.
We aim to provide:
- Structured schemes of work throughout the school which allow children to progress at their own pace.
- Easy transition from home to Nursery and from Early Years Foundation Stage to National Curriculum.
The six areas of learning on which the Early Years Foundation Stage (under 5's) is based are - Personal and Social Education, Communication, Language and Literature, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development. Foundation Stage children will be provided with an approach to learning geared towards their needs emphasising first hand experience, play and talk. The children work in an atmosphere in which they feel secure, valued and confident.
The curriculum for the prep classes includes all the usual subjects and the traditional methods of teaching reading, number and language are used. Learning tables and spellings are an important factor and children are tested regularly. Great importance is placed on literacy, numeracy, science and the humanity subjects are time tabled alongside Physical Education, Music, Art and Craft.
Swimming is taught in the Kindergarten class upwards at a local pool. The swimming pool and community centre used for games/ PE are hired privately. Children are transported by bus to the swimming pool. French is taught as a separate subject in the Upper Prep.
IT is introduced to children as soon as they start at Hazel Hurst and the school owns a wide range of equipment and software.
The religious and moral teaching in the school is Christian. However due to our multicultural society, other faiths are studied and assemblies are held in school.
The children work and play together in a warm and happy atmosphere not unlike that engendered by the old village school or extended family group.
Timetables and information are positioned outside each classroom for parent's information.
